Two suggestions:
1. secure lots of space
2. check out the Railfanning and Modelling Portage la Prairie post list in my right sidebar. There you'll find three Portage Then and Now posts by three photographers, showing the current view of Portage. In my hermetically-sealed pre-1986 memories of Portage, there are still lots of industries, elevators and trackage, but regrettably that is no longer the case. The big industries are located on the periphery of town, not more centrally as before.

Regardless, good luck and hope this helps. Update us when we have another confirmed Portage layout here in the blogosphere!
EricErichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-372955869775302424.post-23727970270654384832016-08-20T15:49:30.848-04:002016-08-20T15:49:30.848-04:00Eric this is awesome! I am in the planning stages right now as to what I want to include on my layout. My biggest question for you is what does the track layout look like now and what structures are left there. I want to model Portage a little later say.... early 2000's?. It is such a unique rail fanning spot. I have never been but hope to some day. I am interested in both CN/CP modeling so this town would fit in very well.

AntonAnton Mazzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06028798763691393524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-372955869775302424.post-63699493607214191522015-09-13T08:21:36.445-04:002015-09-13T08:21:36.445-04:00Good to hear, Jason.

There's nothing like trying it for real, though I never connected a single joiner nor hooked up power to the track lying on my driveway!
EricErichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-372955869775302424.post-10945577033260851302015-09-13T00:35:00.777-04:002015-09-13T00:35:00.777-04:00Great breakdown on the process Eric!
